  • Youth Perspectives on Freedom: Policy Papers from the German-Baltic Conference

The following policy papers were created during the German-Baltic Conference on the 26th to 29th of October, 2023 in Tartu, Estonia, with the contribution of 35 young Europeans (Youth Ambassadors) from 12 different countries between 18 and 30 years. The conference was preceded by an online preparatory phase since May 2023, where the Youth Ambassadors could gather in four thematic clusters under the guidance of a Head of Cluster. In monthly online meetings, they could discuss ideas, conduct research, and set up a framework for their policy paper, accompanied by an online lecture by an expert in the thematic field as well as an overarching workshop on how to write a policy paper. During the conference, the clusters could refine their papers that were then finalized by mid-November 2023. For this year's core topic, we have chosen a profound concept that serves as a foundational value in our European coexistence: "Freedom." Throughout human history, the multifaceted dimensions of freedom have remained pivotal. Yet, even today the term is vague and disputed as evidenced by discussions surrounding COVID policies and the demands of the Iranian women's movement. These examples underscore the subjective nature of freedom, contingent upon individual perspectives and interpretations, leading to varying opinions on how the concept should be defined and understood. The complexity of the concept offers an excellent opportunity to examine it from very different angles. The Heads of Cluster identified four sub-topics for the policy papers, which were subsequently refined in collaboration with the Youth Ambassadors. This process focused on specific questions or topics aligned with their respective fields of interest or priorities. As a result, the following four approaches were selected: Environmental Freedom, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Movement, and Freedom of Creative Expression.

• Planning meeting darmstadt 2024

From February 22nd – February 25th, the team of the German-Baltic Future Foundation and people interested in starting their work with us met in Darmstadt. Once a year we come together in the Haus der Deutsch-Balten in Darmstadt to discuss our plans for the current year, our organization and our ideas and goals for the future. Besides the team, new people joined to get to know our work and get involved. We looked back at the last year and discussed what went well and what needs to be improved. This year, we also had two workshops to discuss new opportunities and topics for us to approach in our seminars, events and the conference. This helped us turn our attention to the future of the Future Foundation and our plans for the current and upcoming years. The country offices, GBYEN and the Cluster and Conference Coordination presented their ideas for the year 2024. Another big topic was our marketing strategies and networking with our target groups. The year 2024 has just begun recently, but we are already in full working mode to try to create many cool and interesting events for you – so look out on our websites and social media (@dbzukunftsstiftung). The evenings gave us time to mingle and get to know each other better and exchange thoughts and ideas. On our first day, we also had some great Ice Breakers which led to new insights about each other and lots of laughs. Since we all work from different locations, it was very nice to meet in person and get the chance to discuss ideas and feedback intensely. We are looking forward to all that is to come and hope to see you there!

  • 2nd Call for Applications: Become a Youth Ambassador! #EuropeShallHearYou

2nd Call for Applications: #EuropeShallHearYou at the German-Baltic Conference in Riga (27-30 October) Do you think politicians should listen to what you as a young European have to say? Are you interested in meeting other like-minded peers that are passionate about a better representation of youth and their ideas? Are there creative new thoughts in your mind on how to make our society more sustainable and future-proof? Then apply now and join one of our four clusters to discuss these ideas as a Youth Ambassador at the German-Baltic Conference in Riga from 27th to 30th October. Europe shall hear you and that is why we are primarily interested in your ideas and your creativity! No prior knowledge needed! This unique project aims to bring together about 40 young people from all over Europe and the Baltic states to discuss the crucial impact of sustainability for the future of the EU. The Youth Ambassadors have the chance to work together within four respective clusters: Cluster A “Sustainability and Consumption”: Our daily consumption has considerable impact on our planet - from the food on our table to supply chains in the production. Therefore, this cluster wants to tackle the topics of sustainable consumption, food security and production to make each other conscious about a sustainable way of life. Cluster B “Sustainability and Digital Systems”: IoT, Smart Cars, Optimization, and Digitalization are all innovations that we are now familiar with. However, this cluster seeks to understand the "paradox of innovation" and examines which digital solutions might be damaging and which are creative and sustainable. Cluster C “Sustainability and Nature”: In order to master climate change as the central challenge of the 21st century, the transition to climate-friendly and renewable energy production is indispensable. This cluster would like to address the question of how to cope with the dilemma that the in principle infinite striving for growth of a profit-oriented economy is always confronted with finite resources. Cluster D “Sustainability and Democracy”: During the past years, we could observe how essential the role of civil movements or NGOs in democracies is, in order to raise attention about climate-related problems and put pressure on politicians. This cluster therefore seeks to focus on how civil actors can participate in and impact politics. As Youth Ambassador you have the great learning opportunity to participate in all four lectures and discussions rounds with experts from the different clusters. All our experts are connected to the Baltic States and will give you unique insights on a wide spectrum of topics related to Sustainability. Our online Summer School takes place on three consecutive Saturdays. On the 27th of August you will meet your fellow Youth Ambassadors and on the 3rd and 10th of August the online courses will take place. After the discussions, you will then have the opportunity to confirm your choice of cluster and start working on an official policy paper. These policy papers, with recommendations for our common future, will be the final result of the in-person conference in Riga. After which they will be shared with local, national, and EU politicians The in-person conference will take place from 27th to 30th of October in Riga, Latvia. If you take part in the event in person, a fee of participation of 40€ ( – if you are living in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Ukraine, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Mazedonia, Albania, Rumania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia or Turkey) or 80€ (– if you live in the rest of Europe) will be required. For the participation fee you will get compensation for up to 300€ in travel expenses as well as free lodging and catering during the conference. (In case of financial difficulties, please contact us!) Youth Ambassadors need to be between 16 and 30 years old, have their current residency in Europe and be fluent in English. You want to become a Youth Ambassador? Then fill out the APPLICATION FORM and let us know about what motivates you to be part of this amazing experience. If you have any questions contact Larissa Leiminger (riga2022@dbjw.de). The last round of decisions will be around the end of July/ beginning of August. Share with us your ideas because #EuropeShallHearYou!

  • Call for Applications! Become a Youth Ambassador! #EuropeShallHearYou

Are you passionate about the future of Europe? Do you care about Sustainability and have innovative ideas you like to share with other young Europeans? And are you interested in working together in an intercultural and interdisciplinary team to make your voice heard? Then check out our four different Clusters and apply to be a Youth Ambassador for the German-Baltic Conference in Riga this fall. The DBJW Conference brings together young people from all over Europe to discuss important topics for the future of the EU. For our conference at the end of October, we are offering 40 Youth Ambassadors the opportunity to discuss their ideas, worries and hopes about sustainability in regard to Consumption, Digital Systems, Nature and Democracy with their peers. The final result will be policy papers with recommendations for our common future that will be shared with local, national, and EU politicians. But what is sustainability? For us it defines our generation as pioneers to positively impact our current lifestyle and create a world worth living for ourselves and future generations. What we need for our well-being and survival depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Our creative solutions for the environment, economy, community, culture and values are at the heart of our societal understanding of sustainability and need political and institutional support to develop a better future for our planet. Cluster A “Sustainability and Consumption”: Our daily consumption has considerable impact on our planet - from the food on our table and supply chains in the production to innovative solutions such as alternatives to single-use plastic and new methods of recycling. We can do more when it comes to the need to rethink our economic model – by shoring up local supply chains, being smart about what we produce, and helping people to throw away less. Our cluster seeks an approach in which ways the youth in the Baltic states can support innovative initiatives in the EU to improve stakeholder engagement. We want to tackle the topics of sustainable consumption, food security and production to make each other conscious about a sustainable way of life. Cluster B “Sustainability and Digital Systems”: IoT, Smart Cars, Optimization, and Digitalization are all innovations that we are now familiar with, and while they have greatly improved our world, they cause an increasing amount of electronic waste and electric consumption. Our Cluster seeks to understand this "paradox of innovation" and what creative and sustainable digital solutions we can develop for the world. Cluster C “Sustainability and Nature”: In order to master climate change as the central challenge of the 21st century, the transition to climate-friendly and renewable energy production is indispensable. However, this transition in turn also requires materials - such as rare earths - which themselves have to be mined under questionable conditions and give rise to questionable dependency relationships. This cluster would like to address the question of how to cope with the dilemma that the in principle infinite striving for growth of a profit-oriented economy is always confronted with finite resources. In other words: How can we counter climate change and master the transition to a climate-neutral economy without having to resort to exploitation of humans or nature? Cluster D “Sustainability and Democracy”: During the past years, we could observe how essential the role of civil movements or NGOs in democracies is, in order to raise attention about climate-related problems and put pressure on politicians. Our cluster therefore seeks to focus on how civil actors can participate in and impact on politics and what the interaction between them and states are – since civil societies also contribute to the sustainability and stability of democratic forms. A special attention will be given to civil organisations in the Baltic States through a comparative approach with Germany, to understand how the socialist past and history might affect the current civic engagement in different countries As a Youth Ambassador, you will participate in four online discussion rounds between June and September, which will give you the opportunity to engage with experts in the respective fields of our Clusters and to discuss sustainable policy approaches. In September, you will be grouped into a specific Cluster to write your policy paper. These papers will be finished during the conference in Riga (27th - 30th Oct. 2022). For a participation fee of 80€ you will get compensation for up to 300€ in travel expenses as well as free lodging and catering during the conference. (In case of financial difficulties, please contact us!) Youth Ambassadors need to be between 16 and 30 years old, have their current residency in Europe and be fluent in English. To become a Youth Ambassador, fill out the APPLICATION FORM and let us know about what motivates you to be part of this amazing experience.
